Managing and maintaining healthy hair can be a challenge, especially for my kinky, coily type-4 goddesses. We know that detangling, washing, and styling can be a special type of beast! Here are our top 6 tips for maintaining kinky hair. ⠀
⠀
1) Finger Detangle: Find a product with amazing slip and take the time to carefully go through your hair section by section, finding knots and detangling the hair. Once the section is detangled, twist it up. ⠀
⠀
2) Wash in Twists: Find a gentle/non-drying shampoo and try washing your hair in a few (6 +) chunky twists to reduce knots and tangles.Make sure you focus the shampoo on your scalp and not your hair strands. If you find twisting your hair still causes tangling, try plaiting the roots and twisting the ends.
⠀
3) Deep Condition Regularly: If you can find a deep conditioner with slip, it's going to be your best friend. Once you find it, don't let it leave your side, and definitely don't abandon it. Try to deep condition at least two times a month. If you want to give your hair an extra boost try adding our Butterfly Secrets Luxury Hair Elixir to your deep conditioner.
⠀
4) Retwist at Night / Wear a Satin Bonnet / Scarf: If you want to avoid major knots and tangles make sure your moisturize your hair regularly. Don't wait until your hair feels dry to add moisture to it. After you moisturize your hair retwist or braid your hair to keep it stretched and protect it with a satin bonnet or scarf to prevent tension, friction and consequently breakage. ⠀
⠀
5) Opt for Stretched Styles: As cute as wash-n-gos can look, we recommend you try twist outs, braid outs, bantu knot outs, flat twist outs, curlformers, flat twist updos, etc. anything that keeps your natural hair pattern a little more stretched out to reduce the tendency for the strands to tangle and knot around each other. Low manipulation styles are also a great option.⠀
⠀
6) Trim Regularly: We want to encourage you to NOT be afraid of the scissors. Try trimming 3 - 4 times a year and be sure to use hair shears, not just regular household scissors. If you are nervous about trimming your hair yourself, try twisting up your hair and simply snipping away any raggedy or funky looking ends. ⠀
